The NIT Generator creates Colombian Números de Identificación Tributaria with the check digit computed via the modulo-11 algorithm used by DIAN (Dirección de Impuestos y Aduanas Nacionales).
What it is
The NIT identifies every taxpayer in Colombia. For individuals, it's usually the citizen ID number itself plus the check digit; for companies, it's a 9-digit number assigned by DIAN when registering with the RUT (Registro Único Tributario), followed by the check digit. That final digit uses an unusual sequence of weights — increasing prime numbers (3, 7, 13, 17, 19, 23...) — instead of the sequential weights (2, 3, 4...) used in other countries in the region.
This tool generates fictitious NITs that pass that check, with two options:
- Company: a 9-digit number in the typical range assigned by DIAN.
- Individual: a number in citizen-ID format.
Neither belongs to a real person or company — they exist only to test systems.
How to use it
Pick the type (company or individual) and quantity, click Generate NIT, and copy or download the result. To check an existing NIT, use the Validator tab.
How the check digit is calculated
Walk the NIT's digits (without the check digit) right to left, multiplying each one by the prime-weight sequence 3, 7, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 67, 71 (one weight per position). Sum everything and take the remainder of dividing by 11: if the remainder is 0 or 1, the digit is the remainder itself; otherwise, it's 11 minus the remainder.
Worked example
For base 800197268, multiplying right to left by 3,7,13,17,19,23,29,37,41: 8×3+6×7+2×13+7×17+9×19+1×23+0×29+0×37+8×41 = 733. Dividing by 11, the remainder is 7, and the check digit is 11−7 = 4. The full NIT is 800197268-4.
