Land is where the confusion lives
A hectare is a clean figure: exactly 10,000 m², a square of 100 by 100 metres. It exists precisely to make land easy to picture.
An acre is not clean at all. It is about 4,047 m², a number that comes from how much a pair of oxen could plough in a day, and it survives in the United States, the United Kingdom and a handful of other places. One hectare is roughly 2.47 acres.
The comparison people actually use: a football pitch is around 0.7 hectares, so a hectare is a pitch and a half.
Property listings and the square foot
Listings in the United States, the United Kingdom and much of Asia quote floor area in square feet, and the number always sounds enormous because a square foot is small: 10.764 of them fit into a square metre.
A 1,000 square foot flat is about 93 m². A 2,500 square foot house is about 232 m². Dividing by roughly 10.8 gets you close enough to judge a listing at a glance.
Why area does not scale the way you expect
Doubling the sides of a room does not double its area, it quadruples it. That is why a 6 by 6 metre room feels so much larger than a 4 by 4: 36 m² against 16, more than double the floor for sides only half again as long.
The same catch appears in conversions. A square metre is 10,000 square centimetres, not 100.
