NIT Validator (Colombia)

Check online, for free, whether a Colombian NIT has the correct check digit, under the DIAN's algorithm.

This validation checks only the NIT's format and check digit. It does not query DIAN and does not indicate whether the NIT exists or who it belongs to.

The NIT Validator checks whether a Colombian Número de Identificación Tributaria has the correct check digit, applying DIAN's official modulo-11 algorithm.

What it is

The digit after the dash in a NIT results from a specific calculation over the previous digits, using a sequence of prime weights (3, 7, 13, 17...) instead of the more common sequential weights used elsewhere. A NIT with the wrong digit is rejected by any Colombian system validating the format.

Note: this tool checks only the number's math. It does not query DIAN, so it can't confirm whether the NIT really exists or is active.

Who it's for

  • Developers and QA validating Colombian customer registrations.
  • Billing teams checking a NIT before issuing a tax document.

How the calculation works

The tool walks the NIT's digits right to left, multiplying each by the prime-weight sequence 3, 7, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 67, 71, sums the results, and takes the remainder of dividing by 11. If the remainder is 0 or 1, the expected digit is the remainder itself; otherwise, it's 11 minus the remainder. If it matches what was typed, the NIT is valid.

How to use it

Paste the NIT (with or without dots and dash) and click Validate. To generate valid test NITs, use the NIT Generator.

Worked example

Paste 800.197.268-4 into the field above. The tool strips the dash, isolates the base 800197268, applies the prime-weight sequence right to left, sums everything, and takes the remainder of dividing by 11. Since the calculation gives 4, and the typed 4 matches, the tool confirms "Valid NIT".

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool accept a NIT with dots and a dash?

Yes. It automatically strips dots, dashes, and spaces before calculating.

Why are the weights used prime numbers?

It's DIAN's specific Orden Administrativa choice that defines the algorithm — different from the 2,3,4... sequence used in other countries in the region, but following the same modulo-11 principle.

Does this confirm the company exists in Colombia?

No. The tool only checks the check-digit math. Confirming a company's real existence requires querying RUES or DIAN directly.
