Why people convert this way
BMP stores an image with almost no compression at all, which is why a picture that would be 300 KB as a JPG can be 8 MB as a BMP. The format survives mainly inside older Windows software and some scanners and industrial equipment, and files come out of them far larger than anything you would want to email or upload.

Your file never leaves your device
The conversion runs entirely inside your browser, using the image engine the browser already has. Nothing is uploaded to a server, nothing is stored, and nobody else ever sees the file.
That matters more than it sounds for photographs, which carry metadata: the camera model, the date, and often the exact GPS coordinates where the picture was taken. Sending a personal photo to a conversion site hands all of that to a stranger. Here there is nothing to hand over, because nothing is sent.
It also means no queue, no daily cap and no account. The only real limit is your own device.
What changes in the result
The size drop is dramatic and the visible difference is usually none. JPG does discard some detail, and it has no transparency, but a BMP rarely had transparency to lose in the first place.
